Hello & a quick round-up of my PhD so far

Here it is my first ever blog! eek!

As this blog is first and foremost about my PhD the first thing I need to do is tell you where I’ve got to so far. I am a year and four months into my PhD so there is a little bit to catch you up on. It feels like I have done so much and come so far already, but I have a feeling that the work has only just begun! Anyway, here’s a timeline of my life as a PhD student so far…

Now it doesn’t seem like I’ve done that much, so I should qualify this timeline with the fact that throughout the year I do bits and bobs of extra work for the department. Mostly helping out with some small research projects and working as a teaching assistant during term time.

I am now coming towards the end of month 16 (September 2011), and so I can give one bit of up-to-date news on my PhD. Yesterday, with the help and support of my supervisors (who are joining me on the application) I submitted my first ever grant proposal. Which I was very excited about. Excitement is great, but if this application isn’t successful I haven’t come up with a feasible plan B (here starts 4 weeks of frantic contingency planning until the outcome of the peer review is announced). So I now have all my fingers crossed and I will remain hopeful that the funders will think my research is as exciting and worthwhile as I do.

So that’s my PhD so far. I plan to post something everday if I can…I already have so many topics I want to write about / discuss with people. So at least the first couple of weeks will be easy. I hope this blog will give me the opportunity to get my research out into the wider world, beyond the scope of the academic journals that I hope to (one day in the not too distant future) publish my findings in.

Tomorrow I think will be all about my favourite research method of the moment – the think aloud technique.

Hooray – my first blog post is done (how did I do)?!
